Executive Summary

A School-Centered Partnership Model

Bending Back Barriers is committed to strengthening educational outcomes for children and teens of color in predominantly Black, low-income urban and rural communities in and around Philadelphia.

Rather than centering our work on constructing new schools, our primary mission is to build, maintain, and expand partnerships with existing schools that serve at-risk student populations. Through these partnerships, we provide direct classroom support, essential learning materials, nutritional assistance, and access to behavioral and emotional health services delivered by certified professionals.

The core of our work involves ensuring that partner schools have the resources they need to create stable, supportive, and fully equipped learning environments. This includes supplying classroom technology, expanding internet access, and offering clothing, hygiene supplies, and emergency essentials for students experiencing hardship.

Through these school-centered partnerships, our organization seeks to disrupt cycles of inequity characterized by low-wage employment, chronic unemployment, limited educational opportunity, and social instability.

The Impact

Students in under-resourced schools face compounding disadvantages — inadequate materials, food insecurity, and limited access to mental health support — that directly suppress academic achievement and long-term potential. Our coordinated supports address all these barriers simultaneously.

The Need

In Philadelphia's lowest-income neighborhoods, students are significantly more likely to face chronic absenteeism, food insecurity, lack of technology access, and under-resourced classrooms — yet funding gaps leave many schools without the means to address them.
